S4C opens YouTube documentary call with commissions of up to £40,000

Welsh-language broadcaster S4C is offering up to £40,000 per commission for original factual documentaries made for its YouTube channel, alongside a separate call for a year-long package of social media content.

Guto Rhun, S4C’s digital content commissioner, (pictured) announced the two opportunities at the broadcaster’s annual conference with Welsh independent producers’ body TAC, held on 4 and 5 November in Llandudno.

For YouTube, S4C is looking for character-led documentaries with a distinctive creative voice and the potential to reach audiences in Wales and beyond. The social media brief calls for ideas made specifically for individual platforms, with producers expected to show how their proposals reflect differences in audiences and viewing habits.

The year-long package could include returning formats, one-offs and topical videos, as well as content timed to major cultural events and national awareness days.

The commissioning calls form part of S4C’s More Than a TV Channel strategy. Rhun said: “This is just the beginning of our work to develop a long-term strategy for our digital commissions on YouTube, and I look forward to working with my fellow commissioners and the production sector in Wales to bring that vision to life.”

YouTube also took part in the conference, now in its second year. S4C chief executive Geraint Evans said: “This year, it was great to have YouTube present as we continue to develop a closer relationship with the popular viewing platform, helping bring the Welsh language into the lives of audiences where they are already watching and engaging with content.”
