YouTube has entered a partnership with FIFA to become a ‘Preferred Platform’ for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a significant expansion of the tournament’s digital distribution and creator-led coverage.
The agreement will see YouTube host a mix of official tournament content alongside material from media rights holders and independent creators, aiming to broaden how audiences engage with the event.
According to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, the collaboration is intended to extend the tournament’s reach and provide fans with easier access to content tied to the competition, which will be staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Under the deal, FIFA will make a selection of archival material available on its official YouTube channel, including full-length historical matches and highlights from past tournaments.
Media partners will also gain additional publishing opportunities on the platform. These include access to extended highlights, behind-the-scenes footage, short-form video and video-on-demand content designed to increase engagement and monetisation potential.
In a notable shift, rights holders will have the option to livestream the opening 10 minutes of matches on YouTube. Selected fixtures may also be streamed in full, depending on individual rights agreements.
The partnership places a strong emphasis on creator involvement. A group of YouTube creators will be granted access to matches and related events, enabling them to produce content ranging from match analysis and behind-the-scenes coverage to storytelling formats aimed at younger or digitally native audiences. Creators are also expected to play a role in pre-tournament promotion, drawing on FIFA’s digital archive to produce original content ahead of kickoff.
The agreement reflects broader industry trends toward platform-based distribution and the integration of creator ecosystems into major sports events. Further details on participating media partners and specific content plans will be released closer to the competition.
