Channel 4 and HSBC put kids in control of family finances

Channel 4 has partnered with HSBC UK on a branded entertainment series, Family Budget Switch Up, fronted by broadcaster Mollie King and financial expert Peter Komolafe.

Launching today, the three-part digital series (3 x 15’) will see children take control of their household finances for the first time, navigating tasks such as opening a bank account, paying monthly bills and responding to unexpected financial challenges.

Parents guide the process through bespoke challenges, while King and Komolafe analyse spending habits and explore why families chose to hand over control.

Produced by GOAT Films, the partnership deal was led by media agency PHD and its branded content division DRUM. The series premieres on Channel 4’s YouTube channel and will be available to stream on Channel 4 in April. Additional content will roll out across the broadcaster’s TikTok, Instagram and Facebook platforms, supported by a TVC across Channel 4’s streaming service.

Mollie King said the format aims to prompt open conversations around money management. “As parents, we’re constantly making decisions about how to manage the household finances and plan for our families’ futures. But what if the kids were suddenly put in charge? How would they prioritise, what would they cut back on, and what would they splash out on?”

Stephen Parnell, digital commissioning executive at Channel 4, said: “It’s great to be working with GOAT Films on this eye-opening new series that will put a big question to the test: How much do your kids know about money? Hosts Mollie King and Peter Komolafe are a perfect duo in the series to meet with the families and bring a great range of clever financial insights to life.”

Mel Crawford, managing director of GOAT Films, added: “Family Budget Switch Up takes a simple but powerful idea – what happens when kids take control of the household budget? – and turns it into an entertaining, conversation-starting format. It’s funny, revealing and genuinely useful.”
