Channel 4 acquires YouTube-originated TFI Friday Unplugged as social platforms fuel legacy format revival

Channel 4 has acquired six episodes of TFI Friday Unplugged, the Virgin Radio UK series that launched on YouTube, in a deal that underlines how digital-first commissions are increasingly providing a way to resurrect established entertainment IP.

Fronted by Chris Evans (pictured), the weekly show will debut on Channel 4 at 23:00 on Friday 17 April, with episodes also available to stream via the broadcaster’s on-demand service and YouTube channel. The first episode will feature Sam Ryder, Shreya Ghoshal, Jack Savoretti, Sindhu Vee, Gemma Arterton, Peter Capaldia nd Cush Jumbo.

Cimran Shah, commissioning editor, reality entertainment at Channel 4, said: “TFI Friday was doing stripped-back, personality-led chat long before visualised-podcasts were a twinkle in our eyes. I’m thrilled that this deal brings TFI back to Channel 4, reimagined in a way that feels fresh, immediate and perfectly suited for a new generation.”

Dennie Morris, director of audio, news broadcasting at News UK, owner of the Virgin Radio brand, added: “TFI Friday is one of those rare formats that never really left the cultural conversation, and we’re proud to see this iconic title find its way back to Channel 4 reimagined through Virgin Radio UK’s TFI Unplugged. We look forward to audiences rediscovering what made the show so special, wherever and however they choose to watch.”

Originally a defining title for Channel 4 in the 1990s, TFI Friday became synonymous with live music and irreverent, personality-led interviews. The Unplugged iteration retains that core DNA while shifting to a more intimate, contemporary format developed for digital audiences. The deal highlights a broader trend of broadcasters tapping YouTube as a development and incubation space for both new and legacy formats.
