The BBC has confirmed the four independent production companies selected for its North East Digital Accelerator, as part of a wider slate of commissions and development activity designed to support the region’s creative economy.
Adventure Alliance Films (County Durham), Film Nova (Gateshead), Northern Child (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Wander Films (Middlesbrough) will take part in the initiative, a partnership between the BBC and North East Screen aimed at accelerating the growth of digital-first production in the region.
Originally unveiled at the 2025 Edinburgh TV Festival, the Digital Accelerator focuses on companies creating content for younger audiences, particularly those aged 16–24, across platforms including YouTube, TikTok and Twitch. The programme combines investment with mentoring and editorial support, with the selected companies receiving ongoing guidance from both BBC and North East Screen teams to help scale their businesses and deliver commercially viable digital content.
The initiative forms part of a broader push by the BBC to strengthen its presence in the North East. Alongside the accelerator, the broadcaster has announced a range of commissions spanning drama, factual programming and daytime content. In addition, two North East-based production companies will each produce three films for The One Show, providing further opportunities for smaller indies to develop.
Within this wider context, the Digital Accelerator is positioned as a key strand of the BBC’s strategy to foster sustainable, digitally focused growth among emerging production companies in the North East, with further developments expected to be announced later this year.
