The Wombles has partnered with Chronicle Media to launch two YouTube channels combining remastered archive episodes with new sustainability-focused content.
Chronicle will manage the channels and use its audience-modelling technology to support their discovery and international growth.
The Wombles Classics will feature remastered episodes from the franchise’s 1970s and 1990s television series, while The Wombles will carry new animated and live-action content based around sustainability, reuse and community.
The original stop-motion series debuted on BBC One in 1973, followed by an updated version that launched on ITV in 1997. The franchise originated in Elisabeth Beresford’s children’s books, first published in 1968, about a group of creatures living beneath Wimbledon Common and collecting and reusing discarded objects.
New material created for YouTube will include arts, crafts, cooking and gardening ideas involving the reuse of everyday objects. The slate will also feature outdoor environmental challenges, problem-solving adventures and slower-paced content aimed at younger children and families.
“The Wombles has inspired generations of devoted fans with its enduring message of environmental responsibility and service,” said Aaron Sisto, co-Founder and CEO of Chronicle Media. “Its core themes of community, sustainability and reuse continue to hit home, and we’re honoured to partner with this iconic brand to expand its reach and legacy globally through YouTube, connecting with audiences of all ages across multiple touchpoints.”
The agreement follows the consolidation of the franchise’s global rights under a single ownership structure. The Wombles Operations has appointed The Blair Partnership as its exclusive global representative as it seeks to develop the property across television, film, audio, publishing, theatre, live events, digital media, gaming, apps, consumer products and licensing. The franchise will mark its 60th anniversary in 2028.
