Particle 6 begins development on AI feature film Misaligned – starring Tilly Norwood

UK AI content studio Particle 6 has begun development on Misaligned, its first feature-length film, which will star the company’s AI-generated character, Tilly Norwood (pictured).

The project is being developed as a hybrid production combining traditional film and television professionals with AI specialists. Particle 6 said it plans to recruit directors, writers, editors and other crew members from the wider industry and provide AI training and mentorship as part of the production.

Founded by CEO Eline van der Velden, Particle 6 said it has already retrained its in-house team of more than 30 staff across AI production workflows and operates entry-level placements designed to bring new talent into AI production.

“Our work this year has proven something we suspected all along,” said van der Velden. “AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgement and time. That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point. The filmmakers who thrive in the next decade will be the ones who bring decades of storytelling instinct to these new tools.”

Misaligned is described as a comedy-drama set in the ‘Tillyverse’, a digital world in which Tilly, an AI entity, develops human characteristics after encountering a rogue AI from the dark web. According to the studio, the film explores themes including identity, performance and artificial intelligence.

“The film will be funny, chaotic and self-aware – very Tilly,” added van der Velden. “But underneath it, there’s something deeper about identity, performance, and our very human fears around AI. And yes, art will most definitely be imitating life.”

The announcement follows a series of internal test productions in which the company used Tilly Norwood in scripted scenes to evaluate AI production workflows and narrative performance. Particle 6 said those tests also attracted interest from established film professionals, who were exploring how traditional production skills could be applied to AI-assisted filmmaking.
