Netflix is expanding its push into video podcasts with a new slate that draws heavily on talent and formats established across YouTube and other digital platforms.
Among the additions is Outlore with Eleanor Neale, the British true crime show that has generated 500 million views on YouTube and attracted 2.8 million subscribers.
The series, which will be available on Netflix from September 27, sees Neale explore prominent true crime cases while focusing on their victims and the psychology behind the crimes. Neale began making lifestyle videos in 2017 before moving into true crime the following year and building a substantial online following.
The deal represents another example of Netflix recruiting proven digital-first personalities and IP as it seeks to establish podcasts as a more significant part of its entertainment offering.
Other digital talent joining the platform includes true crime creators Stephanie Soo and Kaelyn Moore, food personality Meredith Hayden and creators Allison Kuch and Isaac Rochell. Soo fronts The Rotten Files with Stephanie Soo, which is now available, while Hayden’s Wishbone Kitchen combines cooking, conversation and practical kitchen advice. Moore’s weekly true crime format Last Trace launches on September 28, followed by Kuch and Rochell’s relationship show Couldn’t Agree Less on October 22.
Netflix is also developing original podcasts with comedian Katt Williams and author Harlan Coben. Williams recently starred in the Netflix stand-up special The Last Report, while Coben has an established relationship with the streamer through adaptations including I Will Find You.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix vice-president of nonfiction series, said: “Podcasts are a way for members to get more of the genres, stories and personalities they love. No matter where or when you want to listen or watch, we have a curated selection of podcasts representing the best of true crime, sports, comedy, food, and storytelling of every kind.”
The platform will also add US sports show The Pivot Podcast, hosted by former NFL players Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder, on September 8.
Meanwhile, Netflix has renewed its existing original podcast slate for further episodes. Returning titles include Murder with My Husband, The Pete Davidson Show, Shut Up Evan, The Puzzle Room with David Kwong and Allegedly with Ellison Barber.
Netflix said it now offers more than 60 podcasts. Its podcast expansion has also included a partnership with Goalhanger around The Rest Is Football, initially linked to the World Cup and subsequently extended across the Premier League.
