Digital-first production pioneer Goalhanger is launching a new show called The Rest Is Science, to be hosted by Professor Hannah Fry and educator Michael Stevens (Vsauce). Described as a video-led podcast, the show will set out to explore “the biggest questions about reality – one idea at a time.”
Launching this month, The Rest Is Science will investigate the forces, patterns, and questions that define the world around us. The show will drop twice a week – every Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday will bring a deep dive into a single topic, uncovering the science and stories behind it, while Thursday features a ‘Field Notes’ episode, where a curious object sparks a journey through the ideas it represents. Clips across Insta, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts will keep the conversation going between eps.
Fry said: “We wanted to make a show that takes familiar ideas and turns them inside out – breaking them down and looking so closely that they start to feel almost unrecognisable. Science is full of things we think we understand – time, randomness, beauty, evolution – until you actually start to question them. Then you realise how strange, fragile, and completely astonishing reality really is.”
Co-host Michael Stevens added: “With The Rest Is Science, we wanted to go beyond pop science and maths – to dig into the kinds of details that usually get skipped over. I’ve always been fascinated by that space between what we know and what we think we know. That’s where curiosity really lives, and that’s the space this show explores.”
In Episode One, the pair explore whether water is actually “wet,” and how minerals shape its taste before diving into the planet’s vanishingly small supply of drinkable freshwater, the dangers of over-hydration, and water’s cosmic origins.
The Rest is Science joins a Goalhanger line-up that already includes The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Classified, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment. Its launch follows Goalhanger’s recent milestone of surpassing one billion lifetime streams, with more than 70 million full-episode streams and downloads every month.
Jack Davenport, co-founder at Goalhanger, said: “The Rest Is Science signals what’s next for Goalhanger – video-first storytelling, global talent, and ambitious ideas built to travel. It caps off our biggest year yet, expanding across formats, audiences, and partnerships, and sets the tone for where we’re heading next.”
As part of a launch partnership, The Rest Is Science will feature monthly insights from Cancer Research UK. Speaking on the partnership Michelle Mitchell, chief executive at Cancer Research UK, said: “Over the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK’s work has helped double cancer survival in the UK – a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of science. We know that discoveries happen when curiosity meets collaboration, and that research has the power to transform lives. This new podcast brings that to life in a way that’s both surprising and deeply human. That’s why we’re proud to partner with The Rest Is Science – to share the stories behind the science and inspire more people to support research that helps us all live longer, better lives.”
