Gibson TV’s new limited docuseries spotlighting Black Sabbath’s iconic guitarist Tony Iommi has posted a strong debut, racking up nearly 300,000 views in its first week on YouTube. The success of the show comes at a time when brands across several sectors are exploring the potential of launching their own content-driven channels.

The first episode of Tony Iommi: The Godfather of Heavy Metal launched on January 8 and has already amassed 292,000 views, underlining the appetite for premium, music-led content and the enduring influence of heavy metal’s founding architect.

Produced by Gibson Films, the storytelling arm of guitar manufacturer Gibson, the series explores Iommi’s early life in post-war Birmingham, the industrial accident that reshaped his playing style, and his central role in forming Black Sabbath and inventing the sound that would become heavy metal. The opening installment features new interviews with Iommi alongside contributions from a cross-generational lineup of artists including Brian May, Rob Halford, Tom Morello, Zakk Wylde and Yungblud.

Volume One focuses on Iommi’s formative years, tracing his initial ambitions as a drummer, his shift to guitar, and the factory accident that led him to develop the downtuned, heavy riffs that defined Black Sabbath’s early records. Archive material and contemporary commentary chart how the band’s horror-inspired imagery and seismic guitar tone laid the groundwork for generations of heavy music.

The series forms part of Gibson TV’s broader push into original, cinematic music programming. Previous prestige projects have also included Icons, a series of interviews with the likes of Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett. The long-running series has generated audiences ranging in the 1-3million mark.

Further episodes of Tony Iommi: The Godfather of Heavy Metal are set to roll out on Gibson TV later this year, continuing the career-spanning deep dive into one of rock music’s most important innovators. The launch of the Iommi series also coincides with Gibson’s reissue of the Tony Iommi Signature Humbucker.

Gibson TV is Gibson’s official YouTube channel, dedicated to guitar-centric storytelling and music culture. Its content slate ranges from long-form interviews and artist documentaries to behind-the-scenes access to guitar manufacturing, live performances, and product demonstrations. Currently it has 527,000 subscribers.
