Disney+ and its sister streaming service Hulu are ramping up their video podcast output, according to US media reports. The first in a series of planned podcasts launched yesterday (September 9) as a companion to the popular murder mystery caper Only Murders in the Building.
Disney-owned news network ABC7 said the slate of podcasts is designed to enhance fan-favourite shows by offering recaps, behind-the-scenes facts and interviews with cast members. Other shows getting podcasts include Dancing with the Stars, Paradise, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Tell Me Lies, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and Murdaugh: Death in the Family.
Direct-to-consumer & Disney Entertainment Television marketing president Shannon Ryan said: “We built this slate of companion video podcasts to give our fans even more ways to connect more deeply with the shows they love. These are like a backstage pass for their favourite series, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to expand their viewing experience, and continue the conversation in an engaging and entertaining new way.”
The new podcasts are a significant investment in a growing sector. Episodes will be available on platforms such as Spotify, SiriusXM and YouTube, which has become an increasingly important player in the video podcast arena.
