The BBC is creating a new multi-platform commissioning hub charged with reaching younger audiences through YouTube, TikTok, Roblox and other third-party platforms.
A newly appointed head of multi-platform commissioning will lead the unit, manage the BBC Content accounts on external services and oversee the corporation’s YouTube strategy and channel portfolio. The permanent senior role will also include responsibility for BBC Three commissioning.
Working across factual, entertainment, drama and comedy, the hub will develop and commission content aimed primarily at 13-34s. Its remit includes championing creator talent and emerging formats, building online communities and ensuring that programming developed for third-party platforms is also available through BBC iPlayer.
Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and TV channels (pictured), said the corporation intended to “build engaged communities for young people on YouTube”, with commissioned content also appearing on iPlayer. “We are looking for a new head of multi-platform commissioning to spearhead this work, someone who has a vision for how the ecosystem can be optimised, not just on BBC iPlayer and on YouTube but also on TikTok, Roblox and beyond,” he said on LinkedIn.
The BBC is looking for an executive with experience of the creator economy who can combine knowledge of digital platforms and younger audiences with an understanding of the corporation and its commissioning structure.
McGolpin stressed that the strategy would involve making content suited to individual platforms rather than simply redistributing existing television programming. “It doesn’t mean lift and shift TV distribution, it means putting more resource into learning how we can best serve our audience in places where they spend a lot of time,” he said.
According to figures shared by McGolpin, viewing hours for BBC content on YouTube increased by more than 30% among 13-25s during 2026, compared with growth of 16% across the wider audience.
The new executive will work with the BBC’s existing genre commissioners and its iPlayer and channels teams, as well as Children’s, Sport, Radio 1, Sounds, Food, News, social media and BBC Studios.
Responsibilities will include identifying opportunities for content discovery and audience growth across broadcast, streaming and social platforms; developing new formats and editorial propositions; and using performance data to refine commissioning and distribution strategies. The successful candidate will also represent the BBC in its relationships with platforms, creators, producers and other industry partners.
Applications for the role close on 7 September.
