5 has expanded its presence on Everyone TV streaming platform Freely with the launch of 11 new free streaming channels, extending the broadcaster’s portfolio beyond its existing live services on the platform.
The move comes as broadcasters continue to increase their investment in streamed linear channels as audiences shift towards online viewing. The new services – similar in profile to FAST channels – are available via Freely’s electronic programme guide and are also accessible through the 5 streaming platform.
The channels are built around specific genres and brands from 5’s catalogue, including true crime, police, medical and factual programming, alongside movies and children’s content. Five of the new services – 5Movies, 5Medical, 5Yorkshire Vet, 5History and Milkshake! – are launching exclusively on Freely and 5 Streaming.
The new additions include dedicated channels for Police Interceptors, Bargain-Loving Brits and The Yorkshire Vet (pictured), as well as genre-led services such as 5Crime, 5Cops, 5A&E and 5Trucking Hell. A standalone Milkshake! channel will offer a separate schedule from the preschool block broadcast on the main 5 channel.
Kiaran Saunders, VP, distribution & business development at 5, said he was pleased to build on the recent launch of 5Sport on YouTube: “Launching these channels on Freely will help us expand their reach beyond the 5 streaming platform and directly into the homes of our audiences. As more people stream TV live, we want to meet audiences where they are with content they care about. These new channels showcase the range and breadth of genres that 5 excels at.
Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, added: “5 is home to a wide range of programmes that audiences love, and these new channels bring even more of that content to Freely, from true crime and films to children’s favourites, with the new Milkshake! channel giving families even more choice to watch over the summer holidays. As more households choose to stream live TV, we’re continuing to work with our partners to bring the best of free TV together all in one place, making it easier than ever for audiences to discover and enjoy the programmes they love.”
